Obituary

Dr. Virginia "Ginny" Smejkal Dansby (née Prichard), 77, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, passed away on the evening of September 12th, 2024, peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Alive Hospice in Nashville.

Ginny was born on August 10, 1947 to Reverend Dr. Arthur C. and Mildred Prichard in Wheeling, WV. Throughout her life, Ginny was a radiant presence—beloved as a mother, wife, grandmother, friend, confidant, and teacher. She was a dedicated champion of people, always offering a helping hand, a listening ear, and an open heart to anyone who needed it.

Ginny's passion for education was a driving force in her life. After graduating from Davis & Elkins College in 1968, she began her teaching career as a high school English teacher in Charleston and Mannington, WV. Eager to make an even greater impact, she pursued a Master's in Education and later, a Master's in School Counseling from West Virginia University. Her role as a school counselor at North Marion High School was just one of many ways she connected deeply with students, always guiding them with empathy and understanding. Ever committed to personal growth, Ginny then earned her Doctorate of Education at West Virginia University, and for the next 30 years, she poured her heart into her work at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where she inspired countless students and colleagues alike, even beyond her retirement in 2019. She continued to maintain her private practice and assist clients for several years. Throughout her career she served as an officer for various state and national professional organizations and was recognized with many awards and a scholarship in her name. Her legacy as an educator, mentor, and friend remains unmatched.

As much as Ginny cherished her career, her family was her greatest joy. She was the heart of her family, creating unforgettable memories and traditions that will be treasured for generations. Whether she was planning extended family beach trips every Labor Day, hosting the annual Cousins' Camp, or gathering everyone together for holidays and celebrations, Ginny infused every moment with love, laughter, and a sense of togetherness. Her generosity and spirit made each family gathering feel magical.

She had a passion for travel, skiing, and snorkeling, always eager to embrace new adventures. Her daily walks, often with a friend at her side (either on the phone or in person) always brought her connection and joy. She never missed a chance to support her grandchildren, attending all their events with pride and enthusiasm. She truly lived life to the fullest, sharing her vibrant energy with everyone around her.

Ginny's laughter was infectious, and her zest for life was unparalleled. She lived big—celebrating every moment and making those around her feel seen, heard, and loved. As a trusted confidant and counselor to many, she gave advice with kindness, offered a shoulder to lean on, and shared countless laughs and hugs with those lucky enough to be part of her life.

Ginny fought a courageous year-long battle with cancer. Last August, a torn rotator cuff led to the discovery of an aggressive cancer in her right arm. After surgery to remove the cancer and replace her shoulder, the disease spread, and in February, she made the brave decision to undergo an amputation. Ever resilient, Ginny faced every challenge with the same positivity and strength that defined her life, embracing the spring and summer with travel and a zest for living, determined to return to her normal life.

When the cancer reached her lungs, she met it with unwavering courage, undergoing surgery and spending two weeks in the hospital. Even during this time, she remained hopeful, with plans for her recovery and return home. However, in the final two days, her condition quickly declined, and the decision was made to transition to hospice care. Despite the rapid turn of events, Ginny remained sharp, joyful, and true to herself until the very end, surrounded by love and peace.

Remaining to cherish Ginny's memory are her devoted husband, Ted; her loving daughters, Yvonne Ayers (Mike), Ingrid Weeden, Casey Dansby-Sparks (Royce), and Kelly Dansby; and her adored grandchildren, Caroline Ayers, Carter Ayers, Caleb Weeden, Colby Weeden, Charlie Ayers, Ava Scagnelli, Brewer Dansby-Sparks, and Grant Dansby-Sparks. She is also survived by her brothers, Philip Prichard (Suzette) and Al Prichard (Cheryl). Her family was the center of her world, and she took immense pride in her role as wife, mother, grandmother, and sister.
