Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Saul Herrera, age 85, of Franklin, TN, (formerly of Rockford, IL and Bettendorf, IA), who passed away peacefully on March 27th surrounded by loved ones.

Saul was born on August 14th,1939 in Crystal City, TX, to Jose and Beatriz Herrera. In his early years Saul and his family spent summers working up in Wisconsin. He quickly mastered Spanish and English and focused on education. He graduated from Lydia Patterson Institute in El Paso and then the University of Texas at El Paso. He also attended Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO, and became a Methodist Minister before choosing a career in teaching.

He moved his family to the Quad Cities (Iowa) in 1969 and got a job as a Spanish teacher at Sudlow Middle School in Davenport. He spent nights teaching English at night school to immigrants. Saul later moved on to school administration in Rockford, IL, and the Chicago Suburbs. He loved family trips to Chicago to see the Cubs, visiting the Amana Colonies and hiking at local parks. His hobbies were woodworking, model railroading, and reading. After retiring he loved spending time with his family, drinking coffee, reading historical biographies and traveling.

Saul was preceded in death by his parents Jose and Beatriz Herrera, his wife Barb Herrera, his brothers Jose Jr, Armando, Gilbert, Alfonso, and sister Clotilde Limas Seidelman and his daughter in law Lisa Herrera

Saul is Survived by his three children Saul Herrera Jr of Marion Iowa, Simon Herrera (Nicole) of Franklin Tennessee, Maria Herrera of Bettendorf Iowa and by his four grandchildren Sami Herrera, Ryan Herrera, Connor Herrera and Natalie Herrera from his first marriage and survived by his sister Beatriz Sierra (Jessie), as well as many friends and extended family members who will miss him dearly.

A small family ceremony will be held in the future. Saul's ashes will be placed in a niche next to his late wife Barb and he will rest next to her at Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery in Orland Park, IL.

He will be remembered for his generosity and kindness, he is going to be missed greatly. May he continue to watch over his family now just as he did in life!
