With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mike Payne, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, on September 24, 2026. Born on January 9, 1948, in the charming town of Sparta, Tennessee, Mike lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication.
Mike was a cherished son of Sparta, where he pitched baseball and laid the foundations of his lifelong passion for music. From a young age, he immersed himself in melodies and harmonies, forming a band that toured and brought joy to many. His voice, which sang lead on numerous songs, was a source of pride and happiness to all who heard it. Even as years went by, music remained an integral part of his life, a testament to his enduring passion.
His educational journey took him from White County High School to David Lipscomb University for a brief time. Many years later, he began a remarkable professional journey with the Opryland Hotel, where he dedicated nearly 30 years of his life. Known for his unwavering commitment and bright spirit, Mike earned numerous supervisor awards and was a cherished friend, mentor, and coach to many. His colleagues remember him as a man who greeted everyone with a joke and a smile, spreading warmth and positivity every day.
Mike's devotion extended beyond his professional life into his personal life, where he was deeply committed to his family. For 57 years, he shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Sonda "Jan" Payne, a partnership filled with mutual respect and enduring love. Together, they built a family that was his pride and joy. He is survived by his children, Michael, April, and Chad Payne, and his legacy continues through his grandchildren, Samantha, Michael, Ashley, Trent, and Hannah Payne, as well as his great-grandchildren, Rhidian Payne, Charlee Brittain, and Richard Ishmon IV. His family tree also includes cherished step-grandchildren, Danielle, Katrina, Aryn Helfman, and their children, Alastor, Amyia and Ava.
Mike's kindness extended to all who knew him, leaving a lasting impact on his family and friends. His great love for his family was matched only by the affection he held for his Opryland family. He worked diligently to provide for his loved ones, always ensuring they were cared for and cherished.
In this time of mourning, the family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Alive Hospice in Nashville, who cared for Mike with compassion and dignity in his final days.
Mike Payne's life was a melody of love, laughter, and dedication, and his memory will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
